There is a waiter who works in the restaurant of a high-class hotel. He is no ordinary waiter – he is extraordinary. Let’s call him Bernie. Bernie is the top ambassador for his restaurant, greeting all of his customers with a smile and making all of them smile back and even laugh. That’s hard to do when a customer just doesn’t want to be bothered.
But Bernie is special in another way. He is a local celebrity around town, spending time and money to clean up old buildings by adding a touch of paint and planting gardens throughout rundown neighborhoods. He also buys old buildings and fixes them up, renting out rejuvenated apartments that sat vacant for years.
He doesn’t need to wait on tables but he likes to wait on tables. He loves to interact with people and make their experience with him a memorable one. No one has taught Bernie how to communicate. No one has taught Bernie how to make people happy. No one had to – it is just Bernie’s way.
The next time you have an opening for an employee, look for an extraordinary person to fill the position. You most likely won’t find this person in the classifieds. You’ll have to seek out your Bernie. Go to your local restaurant and find another Bernie.
If you look hard enough, you’ll find one.
